Within the scope of its Environmental Policy, Caixa presents commitments based on the development of best practices, which include the implementation of an Environmental Management System (SGA).
The SGA allows Caixa, among other advantages and benefits and through an efficient and effective management of the environmental performance information, to improve its compliance in several areas (for example, energy, CO2 emissions, waste, resource consumption, literacy, environmental responsibility), optimize the available resources, minimize waste, reduce its consumptions and, consequently, its costs.
It was in this context that Caixa obtained, in November 2014, the certification of the SGA, in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard, within the scope of the activities developed in its headquarters in Lisbon (including the activities of the Lisbon Medical Station and Fundação Caixa Geral de Depósitos – Culturgest).
The key requirement for the success of the Caixa's System is the engagement of all the people who work for the organization or on its behalf. Within this scope, the allocation of powers and responsibility is defined by the Administration for all the employees, in order to ensure that the requirements of the SGA are defined, implemented and followed in accordance with the reference standards.
Environmental Management System Governance
The main responsibles for the implementation/maintenance of the SGA are the Executive Board for Sustainability, the Management Representative for the SGA; the SGA Team, the Organization and Quality Division - Quality Management Area, the Internal Audit Division; the Real Estate Business Division, Sogrupo Compras and Serviços Partilhados, ACE; the Personnel Division, the Customer Support Office, the Lisbon Medical Station and Fundação Caixa Geral de Depósitos – Culturgest.
The Executive Board for Sustainability is a deliberative body of the Executive Committee responsible for the examination, decision, debate and monitoring of the implementation, from a corporate point of view, of the sustainability strategy of Caixa and of the CGD Group's Branches and Subsidiaries, including the maintenance of the Environmental Management System (SGA).
Management Representative for the SGA (RGSGA)
The RGSA is responsible for coordinating the activities associated with the implementation, maintenance, review and continuous improvement of the SGA; coordinating training sessions, conducting internal audits and liaising with the certifying entity; and following the guidelines issued by the Executive Board for Sustainability (CDSU).
