Low Carbon Programme

Acting to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions is essential to achieving the goals set under the Low Carbon Programme.

CGD has invested in renewable energies, favouring the adoption of low-carbon technologies in buildings and in mobility, minimizing waste generation, and promoting its reuse and recycling.

The thermal solar plant of the Head-Office Building

Since 2008, the Head-Office Building has the largest solar thermal plant in the country. The collectors installed on the 1600 m2 of rooftop, produce energy for heating and cooling water required for the centralised air conditioning system and for the toilets, saving more than 1GWh of electricity per year, equivalent to about 1 kg of CO2e per minute of operation.

Solar photovoltaic micro generation in the branch network

Installation of photovoltaic solar panels for micro generation of electricity in more than 80 CGD branches. A total of 1,450 panels ensure the annual production of about 430,000 kWh of electricity. With this project CGD avoids every year, the emission of 200 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Energy efficiency in the implementation of information and communication technologies, and in the facilities

Through the consolidation and virtualisation of servers; by implementing a centralised shutdown system for personal computers in the end of working days; by installing more efficient multifunctional printing devices; by installing HVAC and lighting systems that enable the rationalization of energy consumption of installations. With these measures, CGD achieved significant savings in electricity consumption at its facilities.

Promotion of the use of public transports in work-related trips

Including trains, and more efficient management of CGD's fleet, instead of using private vehicles.

Implementing measures

In order to reduce the amount of waste generated and to increase recycling / recovery. In 2014 CGD achieved a 95% recycling rate.

Between 2006 and 2014, CGD recorded a 28% reduction in electricity consumption at CGD's facilities, representing a decrease in consumption of 29 GWh in 2014 compared to 2006, as a result of the reduction measures implemented over the years.

CGD maintained the production of solar energy at the Solar Plant located in the Head-Office Building and the production of solar photovoltaic energy in the commercial network, thus contributing for the reduction of the carbon content of the national electricity system. All the photovoltaic energy produced in the commercial network is sold to the electricity network.
