Environmental Management System

CGD considers the sustainable development practices in the Bank’s everyday management to be a key part of the mission carried out by financial institutions.

In line with its Environmental Policy, CGD implemented and certified, in 2014, an Environmental Management System at its Head Office, pursuant to the ISO 14001 standard. This process aimed to enhance compliance with environmental legislation, prevent pollution and improve the Bank’s environmental performance.

ISO 14001 is an international standard providing requirements for the implementation and maintenance of environmental management systems in a process-based approach incorporating the PDCA ("plan-do check-act”) process for continuous improvement.

Given its size, the remit of CGD Head Office’s Environmental management system encompasses several everyday activities:

Banking and business support activity (Caixa Geral de Depósitos, S.A.);
Medical services within the scope of the CGD Social Services (Lisbon Clinic);
Shows, exhibitions, conferences, congresses and other events (Foundation Caixa Geral de Depósitos - Culturgest).

Within this scope, CGD plans and sets targets for each cycle, and monitors indicators and information pertaining to the environment, so as to assess the effectiveness of the implemented measures in terms of power, water, paper, waste and awareness-raising, as well as the environmental impact stemming from its activities, and implement measures that allow for the achievement of increasingly better results. Ever since the system was implemented, a significant decrease in resource consumption has taken place.

The results achieved are a consequence of the adoption of the best practices and of the individual change in behavior for the preservation of common areas and the responsible use of available resources¹.
