What information should I take into account before taking out a Personal/Car Loan?

Before contracting a Personal/Car Loan, the Customer has the right to obtain comprehensive information about all the characteristics, conditions, and costs of the financing. Additionally:

  • Consider whether your income is sufficient to ensure the payment of the debts you intend to incur;
  • Assess the impact on your effort rate calculated as the quotient between your monthly obligations under other credit agreements you hold and your monthly income;
  • Choose the most suitable type of loan for your intended purchase, as there are various modalities with different purposes and associated costs;
  • Compare different offers, taking into account the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) and other elements included in the standardised information sheet (SIS) provided by the institutions;
  • Provide truthful and comprehensive information about your financial situation so that the institution can accurately assess the loan's risk and your creditworthiness (i.e., your ability to repay the loan);
  • Carefully read the draft agreement and address all doubts before signing the agreement.

What is the minimum and maximum age for applying for a loan?

The minimum age is 18 and the maximum age is 80 at the end of the agreement.

Are there any fees for applying for a Personal Loan?

What types of insurance are available for Personal Loans?

To protect its customers, Caixa offers an insurance package with advantageous conditions:

  • Life Insurance: guarantees the payment of the remaining outstanding balance of the loan granted in the event of the death or permanent absolute disability of the insured person due to accident or illness;
  • Credit Protection Insurance: guarantees the payment of the instalments related to the loan granted in the event of sick leave or involuntary unemployment.

Can these insurance policies be financed?

Can I repay my loan in advance?

Yes, you can do it at any time, in full or in part.

You must notify the institution with a prior notice of no less than 30 days, in hard-copy format or another durable medium. A fee may be charged.

Is there any fee for early repayment (partial or total) of consumer credit?

If early repayment occurs during a period in which the nominal interest rate of the agreement is fixed, you may be required to pay a fee not exceeding:

  • • 0.5% of the capital amount repaid if the remaining period between the early repayment date and the date set for the term of the loan agreement is more than one year;
  • • 0.25% of the capital amount repaid if the remaining period between the early repayment date and the date set for the term of the loan agreement is equal to or less than one year.

No repayment fee will be charged if:

  • Early repayment occurs during a period in which the nominal interest rate of the agreement is variable (e.g., indexed to the Euribor);
  • Early repayment was made in the execution of an insurance contract intended to guarantee the loan.

The fee payable for early repayment cannot exceed the amount equivalent to the interest that would have been charged to the customer for the period between the early repayment date and the date set for the end of the fixed-rate period.
These early repayment rules apply to credit agreements entered into from 1 July 2009. For other credit agreements, such as those involving amounts exceeding €75,000, the early repayment rules specified in Decree-Law No. 359/91 shall apply.

  • • your identity card and taxpayer card or citizen card;
  • • a copy of your latest income statement and its corresponding IRS settlement note;

Can I apply for a loan at Caixa if I'm not a customer?

The consumer credit offer is only available to Caixa customers

Once the loan has been granted, can I cancel it?

Yes, it is referred to as 'right of free revocation'. The Customer has the possibility, within a period of 14 days, starting from the date of the credit agreement's conclusion or, if later, from the date of receipt of a copy of that agreement, to withdraw from the credit without the need to state any reason.
To exercise the right of free revocation, the Customer must notify CGD of their intention in hard-copy format or another durable medium. Upon exercising the right of free revocation, the Customer has a period of 30 days to repay the capital made available and the interest accrued from the date it was made available until its effective repayment. You may also be required to pay any costs incurred by CGD with respect to government entities (e.g. taxes).

Can Caixa refuse my loan application?

The Personal/Car Loan results from a voluntary agreement between the parties, so CGD is not obliged to grant the loan.
Before deciding whether to enter into a credit agreement or not, CGD assesses the credit proposal, taking into account the analysis of the customer's creditworthiness, i.e., their ability to repay the loan.

The Customer's creditworthiness is assessed based on information that CGD deems sufficient and obtains from the Customer directly or by consulting credit liability databases made available by the Bank of Portugal, which allow access to the consumer's credit history.

If the credit application is rejected based on the consultations of the aforementioned databases, the Customer has the right to be promptly informed, free of charge, and provided with a justified explanation by the Banking Institution, as well as the information contained in the databases.
